Central, Washington County, Utah

     Central is located about twenty-five miles north of St. George on Hwy 18.  Central was named because the place was centrally located between Enterprise, Gunlock, Veyo, and Pine Valley.  In the late 1800s an attempt was made to bring water from Pine Valley to the flat that is now Central but was abandoned because of the cost of materials. About twenty years later Henry Holt felt he could complete the ditch by running it through a tunnel instead of building a flume.  He got ten others to help in this effort including J.B. Bracken who offered to back the project with his large cattle herd.  Peter E. Beckstrom, William A. Bracken, Henry L. Holt, James Chadburn, and M.E. Bracken filed for the first five homesteads.  Forty acres was set apart in the center of the flat and surveyed into lots and streets for a townsite. By February 1909 land had been plowed, planted, and fenced and families were living in homes in the new town of Central. - CBA
